On 4 November, Food Wave literally brought a piece of countryside into the city. The epicentre of the sustainable action was the campus of Madrid’s Complutense University (UCM), which activists transformed into an ephemeral vegetable garden with seasonal plants.
Centro de Innovación en Tecnología para el Desarrollo de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (itdUPM), the event’s main partner, offered various information activities, giving students and the public the chance to learn about production and consumption of local food. An intense and engaging day enriched by a workshop on agro-ecology, debates on food waste and tips on responsible purchasing.
The highlight of the event was the tasting session of seasonal products prepared by Valencian chef Juan Llorca – founder of the #PorUnaEscuelaBienNutrida movement – an influencer who focuses his work on food education for children and families. More than 2,000 people stopped to admire the chef at work: wholesome dishes based on simplicity of preparation and organic ingredients.
Food Wave is at the heart of the ‘Come con la cabeza‘ campaign (Eat whit your head) launched by the Dirección General de Sostenibilidad y Control Ambiental (AG Medio Ambiente y Movilidad) of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid – official supporter of the project – to raise awareness on the food and climate change nexus.
