From agriculture… to art, young people in Milan unleash their creativity to engage their peers about the connection between food, climate, and sustainability

Among the 25 proposals submitted in response to the call for street actions promoted by the Municipality of Milan in the framework of the Food Wave, seven project were selected and are going to be funded with an overall contribution of €61,000. From Corvetto to Mazzini, from Chiaravalle to San Siro, all the seven selected projects will involve suburban city areas, outside of the central districts. The winning creative projects for street actions were designed by four youth organisations and three informal groups consisting of students and youths who are actively engaged in the areas of civic ecology, urban regeneration, zero waste, and the fight against climate change.

With the objective of creating awareness around the food – climate nexus, these winning projects will implement concrete, visible, and collective actions that are going to leave a permanent “mark” in the urgan areas involved.

• Urban Ecosophy
  Urban Ecosophy is an idea that originated from an informal group of students from the Brera Academy. Incorporating ‘civic ecology’ and ‘participatory agriculture,’ this idea has made its way from Brera to CasciNet in Cascina Sant’Ambrogio where are going to be hosted meetings and artistic performances, aimed at creating a community that truly support agriculture and promote the self-production of healthy, local, and sustainable food.

• Chiaravalle pane e paesaggio (bread and landscape)
  This project has chosen “bread” not only as its symbolic element, but also as the pivot for the actions that are going to be implemented in the Chiaravalle Abbey. The proposal presented will include community bread-making sessions and the opportunity to “adopt” a piece of land where to harvest your own wheat.

• The Milano City Forest Community project
  The Milano City Forest Community project, proposed by the Soulfood Forestfarms Hub Italia APS association, has the aim to create an agroforestry area in the urban district next to via ​Vaiano Valle. This activity, which foresees the planting of productive trees capable of soil regeneration, will take place following a festival in the Corvetto district and relevant training sessions.

• City Pixel
  Eight commercial activities shutters will be the canvases on which young emerging artists will create artworks on food and environmental sustainability. This collection of urban artworks will remain as a legacy of the Open City Art’s (OCA) City Pixel project presented by the InBovisa Association, that chose as live artistic performances as a storytelling tool.

• Corvetto acque mobili (moving water)
  The Association of TERZO PAESAGGIO, together with the Corvetto Acque Mobili project, has proposed to build a “resurgence” to raise awareness on the importance of existing territorial resources. The project will create a system of movable tanks that utilise wastewater from public drinking fountains – resulting in a water containment reservoir to be located in the centre of piazzale Ferrara, at the heart of the Aler Mazzini district.

• Rethinking Climate: Art and Communication
  The project “Rethinking Climate: Art and Communication” is led by a group of youths already active within the Rethinking Climate movement. It will start with a workshop for youths on the links between climate, global warming and art that will pave the way for an art event (open to the public) and culminate in the creation of public artworks on the theme of climate and food.

• Plant Raised R-evolution
  The Plant Raised R-evolution format, feed your future, presented by the Animal Save Italia association, aims at transforming threee squares into spaces dedicates to urban agriculture. Moreover, the project will promote vegetarian and vegan show cookings and workshsops to explore the links between food, climate and social interaction.

All the projects will be implemented in Milan between the months of June and October 2021.

Dall’agricoltura all’arte, i giovani scatenano la creatività per parlare concretamente e a tutti di cibo, clima e sostenibilità 

Da una lista di ben 25 progetti arrivati dalle realtà più diverse, sono sette quelli che sono stati ammessi al finanziamento del bando ‘Street Actions’, finanziato con un budget complessivo di 61mila euro nell’ambito del programma europeo Food Wave. 

I progetti si svolgeranno nei quartieri meno centrali della città, dal Corvetto al Mazzini, da Chiaravalle a San Siro, e sono il frutto della creatività di quattro associazioni giovanili e tre gruppi informali, per lo più composti da studenti e giovani attivi nell’ambito della lotta al cambiamento climatico, dell’ecologia civica, della riqualificazione urbana e dello zero waste.

Hanno tutti lo stesso obiettivo, sensibilizzare i cittadini sulle connessioni tra cibo e impatto climatico, e lo faranno attraverso azioni concrete, visibili e spesso collettive, per lasciare un segno permanente nei quartieri. 

• Urban Ecosophy

Da un gruppo informale di studenti di Brera, è arrivata l’idea di ‘Ecosofie Urbane – ecologia civica, agricoltura partecipata’ che si snoda dall’Accademia a Cascinet attraverso incontri e performance artistiche. Obiettivo, creare una vera e propria comunità di supporto all’agricoltura, sistema di autoproduzione di cibo sano, locale e sostenibile. 

• Chiaravalle pane e paesaggio

‘Chiaravalle pane e paesaggio’ ha scelto il pane come elemento simbolico e fulcro delle azioni che si svolgeranno attorno all’Abbazia. Nella proposta di questo gruppo di ragazzi, ci saranno anche una panificazione collettiva e la possibilità di adottare una zolla di terra per mietere il proprio grano. 

• Milano City Forest Community project

Porterà alla piantumazione di un’agroforesta in un’area di via Vaiano Valle, il progetto Milano City Forest Community presentato dall’Associazione Soulfood Forestfarms Hub Italia APS. Dopo una festa di via al quartiere Corvetto e momenti di formazione, si arriverà alla messa a dimora di un sistema di alberi produttivi e in grado di rigenerare il terreno. 

• City Pixel

Saranno le saracinesche di otto attività commerciali le tele su cui giovani artisti emergenti realizzeranno opere sulla sostenibilità alimentare e ambientale. Il circuito dei murales che verrà realizzato sarà l’eredità del progetto City Pixel by OCA (Open City Art) presentato dall’Associazione InBovisa che ha scelto come strumento di racconto le performance artistiche dal vivo. 

• Corvetto acque mobili

Per sensibilizzare sull’importanza delle risorse territoriali esistenti, l’Associazione TERZO PAESAGGIO, con il progetto Corvetto acque mobili, ha scelto di realizzare una “risorgiva” che si articola attraverso un sistema di vasche mobili sfruttando l’acqua di scarto della fontanella pubblica. Il risultato sarà uno specchio d’acqua al centro di piazzale Ferrara, cuore del quartiere Aler Mazzini. 

• Ripensare il Clima: Arte e Comunicazione

Si parte da un workshop per giovani sui legami tra clima, riscaldamento globale e arte, per passare ad un evento d’arte aperto al pubblico e arrivare alla creazione di un’opera sul tema di clima e cibo, cui persone di tutte le età potranno dare il proprio contributo. Il progetto Ripensare il Clima: Arte e Comunicazione è di un gruppo di giovani già attivi nel movimento Rethinking Climate. 

• Plant Raised R-evolution

Il format di Plant Raised R-evolution: feed your future, presentato dall’Associazione Animal Save Italia, si propone di trasformare tre piazze prescelte in spazi dedicati all’orticoltura urbana, a show cooking di cucina vegetale, a seminari sulle connessioni tra alimentazione e impatto climatico e all’interazione sociale. 

Il territorio di Milano viene quasi interamente coperto dalle attività dei progetti che verrano sviluppate in tutti i municipi (1-9) del Comune, ad eccezione del municipio 6, a partire da giugno e fino a ottobre di quest’anno.
