Set against the backdrop of Europe's substantial cocoa import, totalling 2460 tonnes annually, this study, made within the international initiative Foodwave delves into the Ivory Coast's cocoa industry, the world's leading cocoa producer. It uncovers the many layers of economic, social, and environmental challenges that define the industry. From the struggles of rural cocoa producers to meet export demands to the alarming issues of child labor and significant forest loss, the dossier paints a picture of the current state of cocoa sector. It also highlights the positive shifts towards organic and agroforestry practices of local cooperatives, which are pioneering sustainable production and fermentation techniques.
